EDAC-ADAC:EATING DISORDERS ASSOCIATION- “Innovation and Integration in Eating Disorders”- 4th Biennial Conference, Vancouver, B.C. by Mara Hagglund
Poster presentation:
For the last two years, Langara College students from the Advanced Integrative Energy Healing (AIEH) program provided treatments in supervised clinical settings at the Eating Disorder (ED) programs in the Vancouver area. In opening new doors to recovery, this presentation will provide an overview of the therapeutic results, based on the evaluation of five sets of clinics, involving seventy-five clients with eating disorders, most of whom have a background of trauma.
This is the first time somatic-based AIEH has been used regularly on clients with ED. This innovative and holistic approach which uses dialogue in conjunction with specific biofield energy-based treatments allow gentle integration of the physical, emotional/somatic, mental, spiritual and environmental aspects of ‘healing within’ the client. Consequently, individuals begin to feel empowered, by learning coping strategies and developing self-care methods that enhance resilience.
In the words of one client, “The sessions helped bring awareness to my body sensation”and “I learned how to notice and love my body.” Another client said, “With energy healing treatments, I felt my whole body become calm, I had ease of mind and felt my numbness thaw.”
ED counselors noted an increase in self-esteem and self-confidence. Their clients were more connected with their emotions and anxiety was minimized. Clients were able to cope better and decrease binge eating and purging. Self awareness increased; there was more calmness, stillness, better sleeps and just overall better days following treatments.
